Up Hill Down Hall / Workshop

At the invitation of University Art London’s joint Chairs of Black Art and Design, Sonia Boyce and Paul Goodwin, and in collaboration with Stephen Carter and Anne Eggebert of the X.D. Pathway at Central Saint Martins I prepared course material including bibliographies, discussion topics and visuals as part of my research for Up Hill Down Hall: An Indoor Carnival, one of the 2014 BMW Tate Live series performance in the Turbine Hall.
As a result of their extensive research into the socio-political history of the Notting Hill Carnival and the politics of space and location, the students produced a special intervention, The Sky is Dancing, as well as assisted artists in the production of their work for Up Hill Down Hall. The students also designed a whose individual pages contain images and texts relating to each of their contributions to the project.
On January 30, 2015, UAL presented Curating Carnival to “continue student engagement with carnival from the Tate event by investigating carnival as an artistic practice in the broadest sense: exploring public procession, the carnivalesque, performance, the politics of the street and publicness, resistance and celebration” inspired by Up Hill Down Hall. The event also celebrated the first Caribbean Carnival instigated by Claudia Jones and held at St. Pancras Town Hall, present-day Camden Town Hall, at a stone throw away from Central Saint Martins.
